The Institute of Laboratory Medicine of the Medical University of Vienna is the central laboratory of the Vienna General Hospital (AKH) and plays an essential role in the laboratory diagnostic care of the university hospital.

The clinical area of the institute includes medical and chemical laboratory diagnostics, which is subdivided into several areas, as well as microbiological and virological diagnostics. The Institute is also responsible for the training of specialists in these fields.

The research area of the institute has a significant focus on the pathophysiological basis of cardiometabolic diseases and the relevant clinical biomarkers. Furthermore, the biobank at the Clinical Institute of Laboratory Medicine represents an essential platform for research activities at MedUni Vienna.
